Collectives Health Week in Sagamu: Bringing Compassionate Healthcare to Remoland
The recently concluded Collectives Health Week in Sagamu was a highly impactful community health initiative, providing essential healthcare services, medications, screenings, and health support to more than 1,264 registered patients across the community.
The initiative also went beyond immediate medical care, with the Collectives sponsoring and providing health insurance coverage for 200 individuals, helping to create a pathway toward more sustainable access to healthcare.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Collectives Club members, organizers, volunteers, supporters, and donors whose commitment and generosity made this health week possible.
A Multidisciplinary Medical Team
The programme brought together an impressive multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including doctors, pharmacologists, pharmacists, nurses, optometrists and ophthalmologists, dentists, nursing students, and laboratory technicians.
We are especially grateful to the medical team from Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, whose unwavering support and dedication contributed significantly to the success of the programme.
Healthcare services reached diverse groups within the community, including children, women, and older adults, ensuring that people across different stages of life had access to much-needed screening and care.
Eye Care and Sponsored Surgeries
Eye health was an important component of the programme. The Collectives sponsored 48 eye surgeries, performed by Dr. Awodein of Amazing Grace Ophthalmology, providing patients with access to potentially life-changing ophthalmic care.
In addition, more than 500 pairs of reading glasses were distributed to individuals who needed assistance with near vision.
Digital Health and Nursing Student Engagement
Another important milestone was the introduction and use of a new Electronic Health Record (EHR) system during the health week.
Six nursing students were coordinated to support patient registration and data entry throughout the programme. Their involvement provided valuable hands-on experience in digital health and demonstrated how technology can strengthen the organization, documentation, and continuity of community healthcare services.
Medications and Preventive Care
Patients received medical consultations, with free medications prescribed and dispensed as appropriate. Laboratory and other diagnostic services, health screenings, and specialist consultations further strengthened the comprehensive nature of the programme.
The combination of clinical care, preventive screening, vision services, medications, health insurance, and digital health demonstrates the importance of taking a whole-person approach to community health.
